Ancient Roman Gold ring with Amethyst Intaglio of Imperial Eagle
Late Roman, 4th century AD - Europe
An ancient Late Roman Military solid gold ring with engraved Legionairy eagle (Aquila) holding a laurel wreath in his beak and on both sides a Cornucopia (the Horn of Plenty) with birds. The ring is exceptionally ornate, with skillfully applied filigree and granulation. The hoop of this ring is a flat gold band decorated on the exterior with an applied band of gold wire.

The eagle was used as the official emblem of Rome and was the symbol of the Roman military, representing power and strength. Each legion carried one eagle standard (Aquila) and the loss of the eagle was considered a terrible omen. This particular ring likely belonged to a member of the military elite.
