ROMAN GOLD RING FOR MAMAS
3rd century AD. A solid gold finger ring with tapering D-section shank and raised ellipsoid bezel, bearing the Greek letters '??? / ?C'(?) on two lines, possibly the owner's name 'Mamas'. Cf. Henkel, F., Die Römischen Fingerringe der Rheinlande und der Benachbarten Gebiete, Berlin, 1913, item 1383, for type; Ruseva-Slokoska, L., Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 226, for type. 13.15 grams, 22.63mm overall, 17.27mm internal diameter (approximate size British J, USA 4 3/4, Europe 8.69, Japan 8) (1"). Property of a Suffolk gentleman; previously in a 1980s UK collection. The form of the ring - massive and with strong oblique conical shoulders - is a characteristic type for the 3rd century AD. The inscription should refer to the owner of the ring: Mamas is a Greek name of Cypriot origin, and it is interesting that Saint Mammes (Mamas, Mammas, Mammet) of Caesarea was a child-martyr of the 3rd century. Very fine condition.
