Roman Zeus Nikephoros Gemstone in Silver Ring
3rd-4th century AD
A gemstone of dark-red jasper representing Zeus Nikephoros ('the winner'), Isis-Fortuna and Athena depicted with their divine attributes: Athena armed with shield and spear, the head covered by a high-crested helmet; Zeus with sceptre, eagle and patera; Isis with the victory crown offered to Zeus; the gemstone is incorporated into a later silver mount ring imitating late-antique models, with flat band becoming wider towards the shoulders decorated with ornamentation imitating openwork of leaves. 7.27 grams, 22.89mm overall, 19.10mm internal diameter (approximate size British N, USA 6 1/2, Europe 13.72, Japan 13) (3/4"). Fine condition.
