An ancient Roman solid gold repousse ring with the god Pan mounting a goat and shoulders with granulation.

In classical mythology, Pan was the god of the wild, shepherds and flocks, nature of mountain wilds, rustic music and impromptus, and companion of the nymphs. He has the hindquarters, legs, and horns of a goat, in the same manner as a faun or satyr. The ancient Greeks also considered Pan to be the god of theatrical criticism. The word panic ultimately derives from the god’s name. The Christian devil is inspired from the greek god Pan. However, Pan was not depicted as evil in Greek mythology. Instead people loved to hear the stories of Pan and his sexual adventures. Pan was a kind god of nature. The god Pan was noted for his sexual adventures with animals, famously displayed on the statue recovered from the Villa of the Papyri, Herculaneum, Italy.
