Roman Sphinx Gemstone in Gold Ring

A substantial carnelian gemstone with finely-cut intaglio sphinx in profile resting on a baseline with wings spread and S-scrolled tail raised, one foreleg raised above a saltire; set into a later sympathetic gold ring; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. 9.02 grams, 24.95mm overall, 19.49mm internal diameter (approximate size British T, USA 9 1/2, Europe 21.26, Japan 20) (1"). Very fine condition. A large wearable size.
